Do You Need an Immigration Exam?

Required by USCIS for obtaining a US Green Card or Citizenship.

The USCIS (United States Citizenship and immigration Service) requires medical examinations to obtain a US green card or Us citizenship.In this exam,, you will only be tested for conditions specified by immigration rules: the doctor will not appraise your general health or make thelth-re;ated recommendations.Although you don’t need to be entirely healthy to pass this exam, you cannot suffer from infectious diseases, drug addictions, or mental disorders.Only doctors designated by the USCIS as civil surgeons can complete an immigration exam.

Remember to bring the following to your appointment:

  • I-694 From-Part 1 completed; DO NOT SIGN Part2

  • A valid government-issued photo ID (passport, IDc card, or driver’s license) If you are under 14 years of age, acceptable documents for proof of identity must show your name, date, and place of birth, and parent’s full name(i.e., birth certificate)

  • Immunization records (official English translation)

  • A copy of your medical history

  • Copies of any previous chest X-ray, if any

  • A letter from your regular doctor outlining the treatment plan for any health problems you have

  • Your health insurance card, if any

  • An interpreter who can speak, read, and write in English if needed.

  • Payment needed at the time of visit (cash, check, or charge)

  • The fee for the initial Form I-693 Immigration Medical Examination is $390. This fee covers the required medical evaluation and completion of the I-693 form as per USCIS guidelines.

  • If additional visits are required, a follow-up evaluation fee of $190 per visit will apply. Please note that this fee does not include costs for any additional specialty consultations, laboratory tests, vaccinations, or other medical services that may be necessary to complete the immigration medical examination requirements.

  • This examination is strictly for immigration purposes and does not constitute a general medical visit, diagnosis, or treatment of any medical condition.

What does an immigration exam include?

HIstory and Physical

  • Series of questions to assess your mental and emotional health and check for signs of substance abuse of behaviors that could be harmful to yourself or others

  • Applicants must have received all age-appropriate vaccinations as recommended by the CDC (Centers For Disease Control and Prevention)

  • Common medical conditions not of public health concern, such as diabetes mellitus, elevated cholesterol, or hypertension, do not interfere with the immigration process but must be listed on Form 1=693.

Vaccination History review and documentation

  • Mumps

  • Measles

  • Rubella

  • Polio

  • Tetanus and Diphtheria Toxoids

  • Pertussis

  • Haemophilus influenzae type B

  • Hepatitis B

  • Seasonal flu vaccine (only if your appointment is during the yearly flu season of October 1 to March 31)

  • COVID-19

Screening for tuberculosis, syphilis, and gonorrhea

  • Tuberculosis Technical Instructions for Civil Surgeons require them to conduct and “interferon-gamma release assay” (IGRA) test on all green card applicants aged two and older.

  • Blood test for syphilis* and a urine test for gonorrhea*

You must bring form I-693 (officially called the “Report of medical Examination and Vaccination Record”)
USCIS periodically updates these forms; some doctors forget to replace old copies with current ones, if you submit and expired from USCIS will reject it and ask you to submit the newest edition, which means returning to the doctor’s office and delaying the application process.
To save time, completing your portion of the form before going to your appointment is good, but do not sign it until the civil surgeon instructs you, The civil surgeon will complete their portion of the form at the end of your exam.There is no fee to file Form I-693, but you must pay the medical exam fee.The fee for the initial Form I-693 Immigration Medical Examination is $390.
